October in Loudoun County means one thing for pool owners: it’s time to close up for winter. A proper closing protects your pool — and your wallet — from freeze damage during Virginia’s coldest months. Here’s a practical checklist you can follow, whether you do it yourself or hire it out.

1. Get the water balanced first

About a week before closing, test and balance your water: pH between 7.2 and 7.6, alkalinity 80–120 ppm, and chlorine at normal levels. Balanced water sitting all winter means less staining, less algae, and an easier opening in spring.

2. Give it a deep clean

Skim the surface, brush the walls and steps, vacuum the floor, and empty all baskets. Any leaves or debris left in the pool will decay over winter and turn your spring opening into a swamp recovery.

3. Lower the water level

Drop the water a few inches below the skimmer (the exact level depends on your cover type — mesh covers need it lower than solid ones). This gives freezing water room to expand without pushing against the tile line.

4. Winterize the plumbing and equipment

This is the step that matters most in Northern Virginia, where January and February regularly bring hard freezes. Blow out the return and skimmer lines, plug them, and drain the pump, filter, and heater completely. Water left inside equipment or underground pipes can freeze, expand, and crack — a repair bill nobody wants in April.

5. Add winter chemicals

Once the water is clean and balanced, add a quality winter algaecide and a stain-and-scale preventer. These keep the water clear and protect surfaces during the months the pool sits idle.

6. Cover it right

Whether you use a solid safety cover or a tarp-style cover with water bags, make sure it’s tight, centered, and secure. A sagging cover collects water and debris; a loose one lets sunlight in, which feeds algae. Check straps and anchors now — not in January.

7. Store the accessories

Bring ladders, removable rails, cleaners, and toys indoors. Rinse and dry everything before storing to prevent mildew.

DIY or hire a pro?

Closing a pool properly takes half a day and a few specialized tools — an air compressor or blower for the lines, winter plugs, and the right chemicals. One missed step, like a line that isn’t fully blown out, can mean a cracked pipe discovered at spring opening. If you’d rather not gamble, a professional closing costs far less than freeze damage repairs.

At Clean Pools Virginia, we handle seasonal openings and closings across Ashburn, Chantilly, Leesburg, Reston, and nearby Loudoun County neighborhoods — so your pool wakes up in spring clean, balanced, and ready to swim.
